Do I need my parent’s consent if I want to get pierced?

Though it’s not a law, most stores will insist on parental consent or the presence of a parent or legal guardian, if you are under 16 years of age. For any piercings (including ears), a registered or certified store will insist on the above, so come prepared.

You may be asked for age proof such as a passport or driving licence.

Does a piercing technician have to be trained or certified?

A legitimate studio will insist that their technicians are trained in the equipment used. You have every right as a customer to ask for proof of such certifications. While ear piercings do not require any training, other body parts definitely do. Remember, it’s your safety and comfort at stake, so don’t be shy and ask all the questions you need to feel reassured.

What are the health risks associated with piercings?

There are risks associated with all piercings. Some more than others depending on the location. This all comes down to two factors – whether the procedure was carried out under sanitary conditions and whether the aftercare has been methodical and precise.

If the studio was not clean or the equipment not sterilised, there are high chances of an infection developing. Additionally, if proper care was not taken post-piercing, with regards to keeping the area dry and clean, an infection could develop later.

There is also the risk of contracting infections such as hepatitis and HIV. Therefore, it is always advisable to check the certifications of the studio and ensure that all equipment and needles used are sealed and sterilised before use. Follow the aftercare regime to the letter, and see a doctor if you feel unwell after your appointment.

The times are changing, and in Singapore, you can see this for yourself with the proliferation of piercing and tattoo studios in the city. Young and old alike flock to get their bodies adorned with customized art and additional bling. If this is something you are interested in, just remember to ask the proper questions, arm yourself with knowledge, and make an informed decision before taking the plunge.
